Corrupted Virtual Machines: Recovering Damaged VMDK and VHDX Files

Ezequiel Albornoz 10 de Diciembre de 2025

Virtualization is key in businesses, but it adds a layer of complexity. When a VHDX or VMDK file is corrupted, you have an inaccessible "virtual hard drive."

Recovery can be done at two levels: 1) Repairing the internal structure of the virtual container file. 2) Treating the file as a physical disk and scanning its interior ("Guest File System") to extract the documents it contained. It is crucial to have the original datastore or LUN in good condition.
